Street Stock Superstars Set On Super Series Stardom On Saturday!

0

(CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – August 22, 2024) – It’s the beginning of three consecutive weekends of Street Stock showdowns at Oyster Bed Speedway!

After a rain-out on August 10, multiple schedule changes were made, including three events in a row featuring extended-distance Street Stock features, so the cars and stars of the Gauthier’s Auto Repair Street Stock division will have plenty of work to do from now till mid-September in preparation for the new season finale date on September 21.

Round two of three for the A&S Scrap Metals Street Stock Super Series will commence this Saturday, August 24 and be a teaser for the track’s annual marquee race on Labour Day, the PiccottCare Piston Cup 100.

Joining the Street Stocks will be four classes, including a return by the Reliable Motors Beginner & Outlaw Bandoleros who were on hiatus for over a month, and round three for the Alvin’s Auto Sales + Repair Bombers. The Chris’s Bobcat Services Mini Stocks and Moore Well Drilling Outlaws are also on the race card.

EVENT STORYLINES

Street Stock Stars Prepare For Demanding Three Weeks

Two Saturdays with 50-lap features and a Monday with a $1250-to-win 100-lap race, all within three weekends. Buckle up, race fans.

The peak of the Street Stock calendar has arrived, where the Super Series championship will come down to the wire and a highly-coveted trophy will be presented to the driver with the best endurance. Don’t forget that year-long points will also be on the line this Saturday and at the Super Series finale in September.

If we flashback to round one of Super Series action, many fans will remember the drama and excitement that it featured. Randy Millar (#77) stole the headlines, although in a way he likely would’ve preferred not to. It was over two months ago when, to loud applause from the crowd, Millar snuck by Nick Chiasson (#27) and Mitchell Arsenault (#51) for second place in turn four coming to the white flag after the two drivers made contact. The “pass in the grass” initially gave Millar a second-place finish until a post-race tech inspection declared him the official winner.

The 2008 champion leads both the year-long and Super Series points by +11 and +5. His year-long lead was shrunk by 13 points after Brandon Albert (#37) claimed a dominant second consecutive feature win while Millar was substituted for by Clifford MacIsaac. Albert is further back in Super Series points, sixth place, 13 points behind Millar.

Multi-time champion Nick Chiasson (#27) has been on the doorstep for a feature win for a long time but has always had things go against him. It’s been since Canada Day in 2023 that he’s been in Palmer Automotive & Truck Center victory lane. Andrew Thompson (#4) continues to be a consistent podium finisher but has yet to find the same top speed that his fellow competitors have.

Randy Snow (#26) is well within the battle for the year-long title in third place, 33 points behind, but has plenty of climbing to do in Super Series points, sitting in eighth place, 17 points behind. Snow has also been on the cusp of his first win since 2016 and is in a similar situation to Thompson pace-wise.

Sarah Jay (#30) missed the first Super Series race but is set on making her debut on Saturday and making a good impression. Maritime All-Star Street Stock Series and former Outlaw driver Matthew Ford (#86) has round two of the Super Series marked on his calendar after the River Glade Speedway revival event.

Bandolero Phenoms Back and Ready After Long Break

It’s been well over a month since the young talents of the Reliable Motors Beginner and Outlaw Bandolero divisions have battled on the high-banked oval. Now past the halfway point of their seasons with plenty of mid-summer rest, the Bandoleros are back in full force at every event for the rest of the season.

In the Beginner class, Hudson Linzel-Waddell commands the field with two triple wins and a 15-point lead. After falling just short of the 2023 championship, he is ready to continue his dominance. But Payton Gallant (#42) is not far behind and has been outstanding ever since her unfortunate ending at the Victoria Day Weekend Season Opener, having one win and three podium finishes in the last three features.

The Rayners are currently duking it out for the bottom of the season-end podium, but Charlee Rayner (#24) is still easily a championship contender. Despite finishing outside of the top three in the last two features, her consistency has kept her within the mix, and she’ll be hungry to end her winless streak. Oliver Rayner (#23) has finished on the podium in back-to-back features and could have momentum for a big win soon.

Juliana O’Connor (#10), Ashtyn Gariepy (#11), Landon MacBeth (#32), and Regan MacBeth (#34) have a lot of work cut out for them in points but still have time to make a name for themselves and salvage their seasons with trophies.

In the Outlaw class, defending champion and Nova Scotia phenom Landon Pierce (#19) enters the weekend with a 37-point lead, a triple win in his last start, and a plethora of consistent finishes all season long. As long as the momentum continues and he starts every race from here on out, the championship could be mathematically awarded far before the season finale.

However, the group behind him could still give him a run for his money. Besides an incident on Canada Day Weekend, Simon Doyle (#91) has also been consistent and has one feature win so far. It’s been a strong first Outlaw division campaign for Andrew O’Connor (#63), who has one win and three top-5 finishes in the last three features. Cole Doyle (#12) continues to rebound after failing to start a feature in June, picking up a win and back-to-back podium finishes in the last two races.

Wyatt Peters (#33) has been a dark horse for a second career win (or first career points-paying win) all season, with his most recent finishes being second and fifth. Podium finishes have alluded reigning Beginner class champion Mason Gillis (#9) in his past two starts. Rhyan Burke (#01) and Hunter MacKinnon (#07) have struggled all season but have remained clean and slowly built confidence when starting at the front.

Title Battle Tightens in Four-Fun Mini Stocks

Heading into the last event, we had just one year-long points battle where the leader was under 10 points above second place, the Outlaw division. Now, the Chris’s Bobcat Services Mini Stock division has a three-point gap separating first and second place.

It’s been a rough stretch recently for points leader Ricky Bedell (#2), who has yet to pick up where he left off after his Canada Day Weekend triple win. With only a best finish of fourth in the last three features, he’ll need to find better luck with just four rounds remaining.

Reigning Rookie of the Year Cash Bridges (#69) has been on fire ever since his first career feature win on July 13, as he’s scored two wins and three finishes of second or higher in the last three events. If Bedell finds momentum again, he and Bridges could be in for an all-time championship battle going into September.

Two-time and defending champion Jeff Bridges (#95) could be a legitimate contender for an incredible jump in points after missing Fan Appreciation Night on June 1 to focus on making his Outlaw debut. Sitting 46 points behind Bedell with one win and three podium finishes in his last three starts, a lot of ground will have to be gained, but it’s not impossible.

While Randy MacTavish (#76) will have a lot of work to do if he wants to get back into the championship hunt (fourth place, -53), the veteran has been a major help on and off the track to the division’s rookies. Campbell Stewart (#3) finally broke through a streak of mediocre luck at the last event, scoring his first career podium finish in his Super Series debut. With four rounds remaining, a title run is not entirely impossible, but a top-three points finish is within reach.

Austin Corrigan (#10) and Rosie Kitson (#13) have mightily struggled statistically for some time but are continuing to have fun in their first year and challenge whenever they can. Blaze Roberts (#6) gained massive strides in the last go-around and could easily be on his way to a first career top-5 finish. Look out for Adam Holland (#01) to pounce on any misfortune that occurs ahead of him.

Brandon Forsyth and Jordan LeClair Continue Outlaw War

At the start of the season, Brandon Forsyth (#3) made the Outlaw division his playground whilst transitioning over from Mini Stocks. However, the past couple of events have seen Jordan LeClair (#47) quickly catch up and form a battle for the ages for the Moore Well Drilling Outlaw championship.

While Forsyth was able to hang on for the Super Series championship in late July, LeClair has been on a journey to make sure Forsyth doesn’t walk away with two crowns at the season’s end. Although results have been inconsistent, a plethora of points from preliminary races and a ton of inconsistency from other drivers have helped his case. The 2023 championship runner-up is four points above Forsyth for the lead. Take note that Forsyth was substituted for by Colin Brewer in the last event, which gave the #3 entry fourth-place feature points.

At one time, 2022 champion Layton Delaney (#7) was tied with Forsyth for the points lead, but the past two features have seen him fail to finish due to circumstances out of his control. Sitting in third place, 19 points behind LeClair, there is still time for the #7 car to get back into the title hunt and bring back a three-horse race.

Harley Cornish (#13) and Corey Bridges (#04) are separated by one point for fourth. The latter moved up one position in points after claiming a long-awaited feature win in honour of a friend’s late father in the last event. After round after round with terrible luck, Bridges is 37 points behind the lead and, judging by his recent speed, could be set for a wicked comeback.

Three-time champion Kendall Palmer (#45), Bradley Richard (#49), and Shane Bridges (#4) form a group that has been on a roller coaster all season with flashes of brilliance, especially from the latter with a triple win in mid-July. Although Jessie LeClair (#46) is far out of the running for a championship, he remains a favourite to win every race and came close to his second win of the season in the last go-around.

“We Need More Bombers on Prince Edward Island!”

It couldn’t have been said any better after the last Alvin’s Auto Sales + Repair Bomber feature on July 13.

The V6 Bombers are back in action for round three of four this Saturday, and the momentum from their last run is at an all-time high.

Ryan Cormier (#96) and Zach Chappell (#44) are tied for the points lead. Cormier has two podium finishes plus a preliminary race win while Chappell has won back-to-back features, and his last one was one of the most memorable finishes in recent memory, as he went from a brutal side-hit to the backstretch wall to stealing the lead in the closing laps.

Spencer Paton (#35), third in points, 36 behind the lead tie, enters this Saturday with one podium finish plus a preliminary race win. Jamie Ronaghan (#59) had a strong start in his Bomber debut last time but left the feature early. Caycie DesRoches (#16) hopes to step on the feature podium this time around.
