Chaisson and Bridges Achieve Saturday Super Series Stardom at OBS!

(CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – September 24, 2024) – Three champions were crowned and multiple drivers became first-time winners and champions at a drama-infested event at Oyster Bed Speedway on Saturday, Sept. 21, which was the final Saturday night show of the 2024 season.

Headlining the event with yet another Super Series melee was the A&S Scrap Metals Street Stock Super Series, which held its 50-lap third round and championship finale. While Brandon Albert (#37) claimed his third feature win of the season, a third-place finish by three-time champion Nick Chaisson (#27) was enough to award him the Super Series title by just mere points over fellow veteran Andrew Thompson (#4), who fell short with a runner-up finish.

The early laps saw Chaisson take the lead from second place and lead 19 laps with four cars filling his rearview mirror while Zach Chappell (#44) spun at the back after contact from behind by two-time champion Tyler Gauthier (#30), who filled in for Sarah Jay after she raced in the heat and semi races. The first caution came on lap 20 as Gauthier and Kenny Snow (#26), substituting for Randy Snow, got together in turn one; both drivers went to pit road and returned to the track before the restart.

Just past the halfway point, Gauthier began his charge to the front, passing Albert for second on lap 31 and catching Chaisson for the lead within three laps while Albert and Millar tangled for third. Chaisson attempted to retake the lead with a bump-and-run, but Gauthier stayed put and was well on his way to a win until a three-car pileup on the backstretch with three laps remaining drew the yellow; the incident collected Thompson, Snow, and Millar, with the latter failing to finish due to a brake problem.

The final three laps featured a plethora of restarts, including two green-white-checkered attempts. During the initial three-lap shootout, Gauthier and Chaisson fought door-to-door for the lead, and coming to the white flag, an unsuccessful block by Gauthier caused the two to collide into the outside wall, eliminating Gauthier from the race. The first GWC attempt failed as Chaisson and Thompson tangled in turn three, but the second attempt was successful with Albert crossing the line in first.

Thompson and Chaisson rounded out the podium while Brian Arsenault (#03) claimed fourth as the last car on track at the end. Snow was unable to finish due to severe damage. Chappell did not finish either after his early-race incident with Gauthier. Thompson won both the heat and semi races.

The Chris’s Bobcat Services Mini Stock Super Series also crowned a champion in its 30-lap third round and grand finale, with Cash Bridges (#69) taking home his first title at Oyster Bed Speedway by a wide margin. He finished second in the caution-free feature as Blaze Roberts (#6) earned redemption from a heartbreaking Labour Day result, scoring his first career feature win. Roberts started third and took the lead from polesitter and rookie Corbin MacAulay (#17) on lap three, speeding away from the field en route to the win.

Rookie Campbell Stewart (#3) started fourth and held second for most of the race until a last-lap pass by Bridges settled him in third. Ricky Bedell (#2) and Austin Corrigan (#10), the latter running double duty between Outlaw Bandoleros and Mini Stocks, rounded out the top five ahead of two-time and reigning division champion Jeff Bridges (#95). Adam Holland (#01) and Rosie Kitson (#13) finished seventh and eighth while MacAulay and veteran Randy MacTavish (#76) both had issues end their nights before the checkered flag.

Stewart and Cash Bridges won the heat races while Holland and Bedell won the semi races. Holland’s win was his first ever at the high-banked oval.

The Alvin’s Auto Sales + Repair Bomber division concluded the points portion of its season with Ryan Cormier (#96) barely edging out triple-winner Spencer Paton (#35) for the championship. Paton dominated the entire night, leading every lap in the 20-lap feature; although the performance wasn’t enough to steal the title, it was his best career run.

Nova Scotia’s Austin Petipas (#24) returned to the track for the first time since 2023 and finished second; he was catching Paton in the closing laps but ran out of time to steal the win. Caycie DesRoches (#16) had a phenomenal night, ending it with a third-place feature finish while Jamie Ronaghan (#59) and Roger Paynter (#5) did not finish.

In Reliable Motors Beginner Bandolero action, Oliver Rayner (#23) emerged as a two-time feature winner in the 15-lap feature after starting sixth, having a minor incident with his sister Charlee Rayner (#24), and taking the lead with about five laps remaining. The win was not without some beating and banging for the lead, as he and points leader Hudson Linzel-Waddell (#57) made contact in turn one, but both cars stayed straight and kept going without much damage.

Second-year driver Juliana O’Connor (#10) had her best day at the track, finishing third in the feature and claiming two preliminary race wins. Rounding out the top five were Landon MacBeth (#32) and Regan MacBeth (#34). Unfortunately, Ashtyn Gariepy (#11) and Payton Gallant (#42) were unable to finish the race after a four-car pileup occurred in turn one on lap one, which also collected Charlee Rayner and Landon MacBeth. Gallant also recorded two qualifying race wins.

In Reliable Motors Outlaw Bandolero competition, Nova Scotia phenom Landon Pierce (#19) picked up his fifth consecutive feature win (including the September Shootout twin races) at Oyster Bed Speedway. Pierce started sixth and took the lead on lap three after reigning Beginner Bandolero champion Mason Gillis (#9) and Irelyn Rose (#47) collided in turn two while battling for first.

Wyatt Peters (#33) was another driver on Saturday who came up short in an attempt for a triple win, finishing second ahead of Andrew O’Connor (#63). Hunter MacKinnon (#07) brought his car home in fourth in a resilient effort which was almost dashed on lap two after contact with Peters on the frontstretch, but an incredible save kept him in contention. Rhyan Burke (#91), substituting for Simon Doyle, rounded out the top five.

Peters won heat and semi one while Gillis claimed heat two and Pierce recorded a semi two victory.

Jessie LeClair (#46) added another win to his 2024 resume in the Moore Well Drilling Outlaw division, jumping from sixth to first within eight laps of the caution-free 20-lap feature and making a big save in turn one at one point en route to his drive into Palmer Automotive & Truck Center victory lane. Points leader and Super Series champion Brandon Forsyth (#3) and 2022 champion Layton Delaney (#7) claimed podium finishes while Corey Bridges (#04) and Tyler MacLean (#78) recorded top-five finishes.

Past champion Kendall Palmer (#45) was on his way to a podium finish until a spin in turn three dropped him back to seventh. Bradley Richard (#49) rounded out the top five ahead of Jamie Cummings (#81), who debuted Matt Palmer’s former blue car. Brady Albert (#38) left the feature early while battery issues forced Dre Folland (#33) to miss the feature, and so did Harley Cornish (#13) after a hard crash in preliminary race action.

All points standings will be updated in the coming days.

Only one stock car racing event remains on the 2024 calendar at Oyster Bed Speedway. While the East Coast Pulling Series championship finale will commence next Saturday, Sept. 28, the stock car racing season finale is set to occur one weekend later with a Sunday afternoon showdown on October 6. All five house classes, except for Bombers, will decide their year-long championships. The Bombers will have an open invitational race.
