Ford Survives Street Stock Chaos For First Feature Win in 14 Years!

(CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – August 26, 2024) – A long Saturday night at Oyster Bed Speedway featured first-career wins, triple wins, and plenty of drama that have set the stage for a wild September.

Round two of three for the A&S Scrap Metals Street Stock Super Series headlined the results with a chaotic 50-lap feature, which was won by Matthew Ford (#86). The Ellerslie driver claimed his first Street Stock feature win at Oyster Bed since his rookie season in 2010 after starting seventh out of 10 competitors, avoiding multiple incidents, and speeding away from the field during a 35-lap green-flag run. Ford made it his turn to honour his late father Wallace after friend and sponsor Corey Bridges won the July 13 Outlaw feature.

There was a second chapter between multi-time champion Nick Chaisson (#27) and Mitchell Arsenault (#51) as the two rubbed feathers early in the race with a collision on the backstretch and, later, a bumper-to-bumper battle for nearly half of the race; the two drivers had their first feud at the Super Series opener in June. Chaisson held on for second place while Arsenault was later disqualified in post-race tech for illegal rear-end gears.

Veteran Andrew Thompson (#4) ultimately claimed the final podium position and did so with perseverance after getting a flat tire and front-end damage from a frontstretch wall hit on lap six. Zach Chappell (#44) made his 2024 debut in the division and came home with a top-five finish along with Sarah Jay (#30), who completed her first 50-lapper of the season.

Fan favourite Randy Millar (#77) looked to have a car ready to challenge for back-to-back Super Series wins until brake issues hampered his efforts, but he was able to limp the car home in sixth place. Randy Snow (#26) and Brandon Albert (#37) were the two biggest casualties of the late-night mayhem as they crashed hard on the backstretch on lap 16; the incident collected Keaton Vessey (#001), who also failed to finish.

The heat races were won by Millar and Ford while the semi races were won by Chaisson and Albert. 11 cars were in attendance, with 10 starting the feature; Dexter Arsenault (#31) did not start.

Joining Ford in feel-good moments was rookie Campbell Stewart (#3) in the Chris’s Bobcat Services Mini Stock division, as he obliterated the field with his most dominant performance yet after months of adversity. The hometown driver started second, won and led every lap in every race on Saturday, capping the night off with his first career feature win in the caution-free 20-lap grand finale.

Championship contender and second-year star Cash Bridges (#69) started fourth and battled multiple drivers for second place in the first half of the race, eventually passing Cornwall’s Blaze Roberts (#6) to claim the runner-up position. Roberts scored his first career podium finish with his best run of the season.

Two-time and defending champion Jeff Bridges (#95) initially finished fourth but was disqualified in post-race tech due to illegal weight, giving the spot to veteran Randy MacTavish (#76). Points leader Ricky Bedell (#2) struggled all night and was involved in an incident in the semi race but was able to finish inside the top five in the feature, with Austin Corrigan (#10) and Adam Holland (#01) following behind.

Stewart won both qualifying races. Eight cars were in attendance. The Alvin’s Auto Sales + Repair Bombers were mixed with the Mini Stocks with three cars in attendance. Souris’ Spencer Paton (#35) collected a triple win with Ryan Cormier (#96) and Caycie DesRoches (#16) finishing second and third.

The Reliable Motors Bandoleros impressed in their return to competition on Saturday night, with both the Beginner and Outlaw classes seeing triple wins and a first-career feature win.

Oliver Rayner (#23) knew there was no better way to earn a first feature win than by also scoring his first career triple win. The Summerside driver started fourth in the 15-lap feature and took the lead on lap one, never looking back as he went on to lead every lap and eventually joined sister Charlee Rayner (#24) on the 2024 winner’s list. Points leader Hudson Linzel-Waddell (#57) and Payton Gallant (#42) finished on the podium while Charlee Rayner and Juliana O’Connor (#10) rounded out the top five with solid performances.

Oliver Rayner won heat one and semi two while Linzel-Waddell and O’Connor also claimed preliminary race wins. Eight cars were in attendance but seven started the feature as Ashtyn Gariepy (#11) had a scary crash in a pre-race practice, which she walked away from unhurt.

Nova Scotia’s Landon Pierce (#19) continued his bid to defend the Outlaw crown, winning the 15-lap feature after a spectacular surge to the front from sixth place. He and Simon Doyle (#91) fought side-by-side for the win on a late restart, with Pierce taking his second consecutive feature win after also emerging victorious back in July.

Cole Doyle (#12) settled for third place while Andrew O’Connor (#63) placed a solid fourth and Hunter MacKinnon (#07) boosted his confidence with a top-five finish. Halifax’s Irelyn Rose (#47) came home sixth after a close call early in the race as she spun in front of the leaders. New Brunswick’s Hudson Ruff (#83) made his 2024 debut and scored a semi race win but crashed in the feature.

Cole Doyle, Pierce, and Ruff all claimed wins in qualifying action. Eight cars were in attendance for the feature, which had three cautions.

Pierce wasn’t the only driver to have an incredible surge to the front and come out with a feature win, as Jessie LeClair (#46) picked up his second of the Moore Well Drilling Outlaw season after starting sixth and passing five cars within the first five laps. Although a championship is out of his reach, his bid for trophies remains much alive, and he continued it in the caution-free 20-lap feature.

Jonathan Fitzpatrick (#78) had his fastest run of the season, holding off multi-time Pro Stock champion Matt Palmer (#5) in a thrilling late battle for the runner-up spot. Brandon Forsyth (#3) finished fourth while past champion Kendall Palmer (#45) rounded out the top-five.

Corey Bridges (#04), Kendall Palmer, Matt Palmer, and LeClair were victorious in heat and semi race action. 13 cars were in attendance. Dexter Arsenault (#7) substituted for 2022 champion Layton Delaney.
